Organization Overview

The Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) is a public authority that provides year-round public transit service to the six towns of Martha's Vineyard. The VTA's transportation services consist of both fixed route and paratransit services (known as the "Lift"). The VTA also runs a weekly van service to Boston area medical facilities. The VTA is one of the first authorities in MA to launch an electric fleet and hopes to continue to be a leader among Massachusetts transit authorities in infrastructure advancements while maintaining a comfortable, reliable and safe rider experience.

Position Summary

The entry level maintenance technician supports the lead technician and service coordinator in servicing and repairing the entire VTA fleet through their basic understanding of automotive systems and components. Much of the work in this position will be on medium/heavy duty diesel and gasoline vehicles. The individual must be motivated and detail oriented, and possess a desire learn. Entry level mechanics have an opportunity for training on electric buses, and the VTA will support technicians in acquiring a Commercial Driver’s Licence (CDL).

Compensation:

$25.00 - $30.00 per hour, Pay commensurate with experience

Primary Responsibilities:

All employees are required to follow proper, lawful procedures while carrying out their duties, as outlined in the VTA Personnel Policy Manual. Essential duties and responsibilities include:

Conduct basic inspections and diagnostic tests on vehicles;

Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks;

Removes, cleans, repairs, reinstalls and adjusts all vehicle components;

Assist senior technicians with repairs and replacements of vehicle components;

Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area;

Document all work performed and parts used in vehicle repair orders;

Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment;

Communicate effectively with coworkers;

Safely uses all power and hand-held mechanic’s tools;

Evaluates completed work and conducts inspection of equipment prior to re-lease back into service;

Cleans exterior of all Authority-maintained vehicles and fuel as needed, prior to release back into service;

Adds lubricants and other fluids to all Authority-maintained vehicles as needed, prior to release back into service;

Strives to complete work and return vehicle to service before end of shift;

Fuels maintenance department vehicles and others as needed;

Cleans and maintains Authority-issued uniforms in a safe, responsible manner;

Attends training classes at VTA’s expense, as required;

Miscellaneous building maintenance including, but not limited to changing lightbulbs, hanging pictures, plowing and the like, etc;

Position Requirements:

Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain, and a clear driving record.

This position is subject to pre- and post-employment drug testing.

High school diploma or equivalent in progress, vocational mechanical training and/or direct fleet repair experience.

Must have the ability to read, interpret and analyze maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, trade manuals, governmental regulations, and other documents.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide figures, and calculate figures and amounts such as percentages and averages.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited information exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Strong willingness to learn and take direction from experienced technicians; Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail; Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks;
